Rum Recommendations

These few ingredients, in small amounts, go well with nearly any rum. The drink was originally designed for a particular variety of robust, long-aged, pot-still rum from Jamaica in 1944. Since that spirit is no longer available, we can experiment to see what works best.

Denizen Merchant’s Reserve, a blend of pot still rums from Jamaica and Martinique, is a faithful recreation of the kind of rum used in the original Mai Tai. In lieu of that, try 1.5oz blended long aged rum and .5oz unaged or lightly aged pot still rum.
